INDIRECT SPEND SURVEY

52% of organizations estimate more than a quarter of their indirect spend is unmanaged or under-optimized

Indirect categories sit outside most teams’ daily focus, and plenty of value goes unclaimed as a result. To find out how much, Art of Procurement recently surveyed procurement and business leaders on behalf of Una, asking what share of their indirect spend they believe is unmanaged or under-optimized.

Key Findings

84% of surveyed organizations estimate more than 10% of their indirect spend is unmanaged or under-optimized, 52% put it above 25%, and 16% put it above 50%.
The gap grows with spend. Among organizations spending $25M or more a year on indirect categories, 61% estimate more than a quarter is unmanaged, compared with 29% of those spending under $25M.
Savings come first. 96% of respondents rank cost savings among the top three benefits that would influence a GPO partnership, and 81% rank it first.
62% already work with a GPO or purchasing cooperative, and 68% of those GPO users work with two or more.
Bandwidth is the top barrier. Among organizations without a GPO, 62% say limited team bandwidth is a reason indirect spend goes unmanaged.

The bigger the spend, the bigger the gap

The challenge grows with total spend. Among organizations at $25M or more, 61% put the unmanaged share above a quarter, compared with 29% of smaller spenders, and nearly one in four of the larger group puts it above half.

The GPO benefits buyers value the most

When asked which benefits would most influence a GPO partnership, buyers put savings first by a wide margin, followed by the visibility and benchmarking that show where the savings are.

Most organizations already use a GPO, and the rest face a familiar set of barriers

Group purchasing is well established among the organizations we surveyed, and many work with more than one partner. For those still without one, the reasons they give for unmanaged spend are largely about capacity.
